Premier League Title Decider? Liverpool face Man Utd at Anfield

Last night’s 1-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League has moved Manchester United three points clear at the top of the table. Paul Pogba’s 71st minute strike enough to take the Red Devils ahead of their great rivals from down the East Lancashire Road, Liverpool.

However, they have the opportunity to extend that lead to six points at the weekend.  On Sunday Manchester United take their superb away record in the Premier League so far this season, where they have dropped just two points in eight away games, to face a Liverpool. A side who have the exact same home record.

With midfielder Paul Pogba already bullish about the Red Devil’s chances of completing a ‘big moment’ at Anfield, it is a game which could well see United take a stranglehold on the title race, or which could see Liverpool throw it wide open once again with a victory.

When these two northern giants clash it is always a big game and ranks up there with El Clasico as one of the biggest games in world football. Interest in it will be huge across the world, with billions likely to tune in to watch and of course many of them will have had a punt on the outcome of the game.

Now that we have a number of places where you can bet sorted, let’s now take a look ahead to Sunday’s big game with a preview of both teams and then some tips on how we see the big game panning out.

Liverpool v Manchester United – Preview

It is second in the table against the team top of the table at Anfield on Sunday as Champions Liverpool host a Manchester United side that have not lost any of their last eleven in the Premier League since a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal back on November 1.

Liverpool’s record is less than impressive of late with draws against West Brom and Newcastle followed by a 1-0 defeat away to Southampton, results which have seen the Reds overhauled at the top by United and also potentially Manchester City, who if they win their two games in hand, can go above Liverpool by two points too.

So while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils come into this game with real confidence, Jurgen Klopp faces the task of eliciting a performance from a Liverpool side that have looked devoid of attacking ideas in recent games in the Premier League and he knows that defeat to United here would not just end their long unbeaten Premier League record at Anfield, but also potentially be fatal to their Premier League title hopes.

It is the start of a crucial month for Jurgen Klopp’s men as they face a run of games ahead of their Champions League Round of 16 tie with Red Bull Leipzig, that will be key to their title hopes. They not only face Manchester United on Sunday, but they also face the Red Devils in the FA Cup Fourth Round next weekend at Old Trafford and then have games in quick succession away to Tottenham and West Ham before home games with Brighton and Manchester City and then a final away game at Leicester.

The Reds will play four of the top six over that period (United twice), as well as away games at Burnley and West Ham, and one at home to Brighton.

So, it is fair to say that by the time the Reds are back in action in the Champions League, we will have a much better idea of their chances of regaining the title that they won last season so comfortably.

Recent Games Between The Teams

The most recent matches between the teams have seen a lot of drawn matches. Indeed, since March 2016, of the ten games played since then, six have finished as a draw, three have finished in a win for Liverpool with just one win for United in that period.

Liverpool have won the last two games at Anfield, 3-1 back in December 2018 and then a 2-0 victory back in January last year.

It should also be noted that the Reds last lost a league game at Anfield back in April 2017 to Crystal Palace and since then they have played 67 games without defeat in the Premier League on home soil.

Liverpool v Manchester United Team News

Liverpool have got long-term absentees Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk still out, but it seems likely Joel Matip will be able to return in central defence alongside Fabinho. Thiago is also back fit and could get a role in midfield alongside Henderson and Wijnaldum. Naby Keita though looks set to miss out and the game still comes a little too early for Diogo Jota.

  • Probable Liverpool Team – 4-3-3 – Alisson, Alexander Arnold, Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Firmino, Mane, Salah

After a battling win at Burnley in midweek, Manchester United didn’t pick up any additional injury worries, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a relatively healthy squad to pick from for this game. I expect McTominay and Fred to come back into midfield here and United to perhaps play with more pace to try and hit the Reds on the counter.

  • Probable Man Utd Team – 4-2-3-1 – De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, Maguire, Bailly, Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Rashford, Greenwood, Martial.

Liverpool v Manchester United Tips

Two sides with the same home and away records, occupying the top two spaces in the table and with a record that suggests a draw is more likely to be the outcome than any victory based on past meetings. It is perhaps not surprising to say that all things considered, a draw at 11/4 does look the smart pick on the Full Time Result market here.

While that wouldn’t be a disaster for Liverpool, it would not be a positive result either and certainly, Manchester United would be happier of the two teams should that be the case, especially with a home game to come against Liverpool later in the season.

Games involving these two teams usually see goals scored and as such the 1-1 draw would be my pick for the Correct Score market which is a 7/1 shot with bet365 Sport at the moment.

In terms of scoring a goal, I think the Anytime Market offers better flexibility than betting on the first or last goalscorer and as such, I think that Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford at 21/10 is probably just about the best value pick here, although Liverpool fans may like the 13/8 on Roberto Firmino, who has a knack of scoring crucial goals against teams for the Reds.
