Reds Take Big Steps Towards Premier League Title over Xmas

It has been a fantastic time to be a Liverpool fan. At one point last season, the Reds were 3-0 down against Barcelona and Manchester City looked set to wrap up the Premier League title. However, since that amazing comeback win over the Catalan’s at Anfield, the Reds have managed to secure three trophies in the remainder of the year.

First up, despite a second place finish in the Premier League, Liverpool were crowned Champions of Europe thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid. Then in August, they defeated Chelsea to win the European Super Cup and then in December, they confirmed themselves as the best club side in the world when they lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar thanks to a 1-0 win over Flamengo.

Add to that an incredible start to the season which has seen them open up a massive gap at the top of the Premier League, dropping just two points since the season began, and it is easy to see why Liverpool fans are so happy. However as 2020 dawns, there will be three trophies dominating Reds fans thoughts, the Premier League, Champions League and to a lesser extent, the FA Cup.

Let’s now take a look at some of the key results in December for Liverpool, as well as previewing their chances of winning the big three competitions remaining that they are competing in, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League, a trophy which they are the current holders of.

Liverpool’s Magic December

Liverpool’s fabulous December started with them winning their last Champions League group stage game to finish top of their group and earn a seeded spot in the draw in Nyon. They also continued their excellent league form beating Everton, Bournemouth, Watford, Leicester City and most recently Wolves.

Added to that was the fact that their main rivals, Leicester City and Manchester City also dropped points in the month,  Leicester drawing at Norwich before losing to Man City and then Liverpool at home and then Man City were beaten by Manchester United and Wolves during the month too.

Liverpool and the Premier League

Currently, Liverpool are 1/20 to win the Premier League title and it is not hard to see why bet365 is offering those odds on the Reds. Of their last 32 Premier League games, Liverpool have won 31 and drawn the other, picking up 94 points along the way. That run includes a 13-game winning streak at the end of last season, along with this season’s incredible 18 wins from 19 games.

With Leicester City 13 points behind and Manchester City 14 points adrift, Liverpool also have the advantage of a game in hand over their two closest rivals. It is also worth remembering that they have beaten Leicester City twice already this season in the EPL, so won’t have to play them again in the competition this season.

The Reds do have some tough games left, with the away games at Man City, Wolves, Arsenal and Tottenham looking tough, while the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park will also be a tough one. As will home games with Chelsea and Manchester United. But even so, it is hard to see a team that has lost just one game over the last two seasons, losing six or seven of their last 19 games.

Liverpool’s FA Cup Chances

If you are seeking to have a bet on Liverpool to win something this season, then the FA Cup is probably the best odds you will find. The Reds are currently the 6/1 second favourites for this trophy behind Manchester City and there are a couple of key reasons for that.

The first is that Liverpool have a much tougher task in the FA Cup Third Round than City, who face Port Vale at home, while Liverpool will take on city rivals Everton at Anfield. The Toffees have been galvanised, initially by caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson and then by new manager Carlo Ancelotti, the man who has inflicted a defeat on Liverpool this season when he was manager of Napoli in the Champions League.

In addition to that, it is very likely Jurgen Klopp will rotate a number of first teamers for this game and that would weaken Liverpool a great deal, while Everton are much more likely to play a stronger first team to try and land the win.

This could make the FA Cup a tricky one for Liverpool to win, but if they can get through this tie and perhaps get a favourable draw or two, then they will certainly have one eye on a Wembley final in May.

Liverpool’s Champions League Chances

Of the two competitions, Liverpool will field a full strength side in their Champions League games and as such, their chances of success may well be greater in this competition. The Reds have been handed a tough draw in the Round of 16, with a trip to Madrid in February to take on Atletico before the return leg at Anfield three weeks later.

However, if the Reds can get through that tie then it is an open draw in the competition from then on in and in truth, there are no teams left in the competition that the Reds would be unduly fearful of facing over two legs, especially with the magic of Anfield ready to light up the tournament once again.

Manchester City may well be now primarily focusing on this tournament too, given that the league is out of their reach seemingly,  but City have never reached the final of this tournament and have dropped out in both the past two years at the quarterfinal stage.

The Reds are second favourites behind Manchester City to win this tournament too and I think that could be a very solid option for fans looking for a value bet on the reds.
