Last week, Manchester City’s defeat at Chelsea, coupled with Liverpool’s thumping 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield the night before, meant that for the first time in 30 years, Liverpool would be confirmed as the Premier League Champions.
The Reds broke all kinds of records on their way to the title success, winning the league at the earliest opportunity of any team in the Premier League era and also they could set a number of new marks for number of home and away wins as well as points collected.
City, who remain safely in second spot in the table, still have their interest in trophies in both the FA Cup (where they reached the semifinals last weekend) and the Champions League, which resumes in August in Lisbon, Portugal.
However, the clash between the two in the Premier League, even if there is little more than bragging rights at stake, is the match that has captured the imagination of football fans around the world and as such, has attracted plenty of betting interest from punters too.

Manchester City v Liverpool Comparison
- V Arsenal (H) – W 3-0 (Sterling, De Bruyne, Foden)
- V Burnley (H) – W 5-0 (Foden 2, Mahrez 2, Silva.D)
- V Chelsea (A) – L 1-2 (De Bruyne)
- V Newcastle (A) – W 2-0 (FA Cup Quarterfinal) (De Bruyne, Sterling)
Current League Position – 2nd (63 points from 31 games)
Competitions Remaining – FA Cup (semi-finalists), Champions League (Round of 16 – City lead 2-1 from the first leg of their Round of 16 away tie with Real Madrid)
Already Won This Season – Football League Cup (beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley in March).
Injuries/Suspensions – City have two main absentees due to injury with young centre back Erik Garcia still out with a head injury, while Sergio Aguero’s knee problem rules him out of the game. Midfielder Fernandinho will miss the game as he serves the second game of a two match ban following his dismissal against Chelsea.
Man City Predicted Team – (4-3-3) – Ederson, Walker, Rodri, Laporte, Mendy, Silva.B, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sterling, Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus
City have started the last few games well but have notably tailed off in the second half of games and the fact that they have played two more games than Liverpool up to this point, since the restart is I think having an effect on them being able to sustain their levels of performance. I expect Mendy to stay in the team despite some shaky performances, while Jesus will continue to deputise for Aguero and Rodri could deputise in defence for Fernandinho opening a spot for Bernardo Silva in midfield.
- V Everton (A) – D 0-0
- V Crystal Palace (H) – W 4-0 (Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Fabinho, Mane)
Current League Position – 1st (86 points from 31 games – Confirmed as Premier League Champions)
Competitions Remaining – None – Only to complete their Premier League fixtures
Already Won This Season – European Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League
Injuries/Suspensions – Liverpool could have a fully fit squad to pick from for this game although there are doubts over the fitness of James Milner and Joel Matip, both of whom picked up knocks in the derby fixture, but who both could be fit to at least make the bench for this game.
Liverpool Predicted XI – (4-3-3) – Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Gomez, Van Dijk, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Salah, Mane, Firmino
Even with the league title won, I don’t expect Jurgen Klopp to rest too many players for this particular game and I think the Reds, with over a week to prepare, will be at full strength for this game. The last thing Klopp will want will be to be declared Champions, play a weakened team and then be spanked by their closest rivals. As such, I can see him naming a very strong team and perhaps making changes as the game wears on, notably I midfield with the likes of Oxlade Chamberlain to make an impression from the bench.
Match Predictions and Tips
Full Time Result
This is a tough one to call. I feel City have the greater motivation to win this game, but I also feel that there are real signs that they are struggling with the physical demands of five games in the space of a fortnight after a three month layoff. Liverpool looked fitter in their game against Palace and looked to be back to their very best after a below par display at Goodison. As such, this is a game I can see City taking the lead in but where I can see Liverpool staging a second half comeback to snatch a draw. – Prediction – Draw – 29/10.
As we have intimated above, we think this game is most likely to end in a draw, which means that it is a question of deciding how the goals will be divided up. Both teams score plenty, but I feel the Reds defence is stronger than Citys and as such, the most likely outcome is a 1-1 draw. Prediction – 1-1 at 15/2.
Usually, when City play Liverpool, Leroy Sane is always my pick to score for them as he has a great record against the Reds, but he is unlikely to play given he is set to move to Bayern Munich, so I think a more intriguing pick is Sadio Mane for Liverpool who always tends to play well in the big games and who came so close to scoring last season in this fixture. Prediction – Sadio Mane to score anytime – 8/5.
