Group G Team Previews

Brazil

  • Manager – Tite
  • Captain – Thiago Silva
  • 3 Key Players – Neymar Jr. (Att), Vinicius Jr. (Att), Alison Becker (GK)
  • Best World Cup Performance – 5 x Winners (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002)
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Quarter Finals
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 1st
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – WWWWW (unbeaten in last 15 games)

The bookmakers favourites to win a trophy for a sixth time, Brazil are unbeaten in their last 15 matches and they come into this game in superb form having scored 26 goals in their last seven games and with a depth of squad that is the envy of most teams here. Neymar Jr. is still the main man for Tite’s team but he is well supported by a number of exciting young attackers like Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, Rodrygo and Gabriel Martinelli. Brazil are blessed with two world class goalkeepers and a very experienced defense led by Chelsea’s Thiago Silva. It would be a huge surprise if they did not come through this group with a 100% record, even if they do face some tough tests in this first round of the tournament.

Serbia

  • Manager – Dragan Stojkovic
  • Captain – Dusan Tadic
  • 3 Key Players – Aleksandar Mitrovic (Att), Dusan Vlahovic (Att), Filip Kostic (Mid)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Fourth Place
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Group Stage
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 21st
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – WWDWW

Serbia must feel a bit as if the luck is against them having been drawn into a group with Brazil for the second World Cup Finals in succession, but this team is one that the Brazilians, and the other teams in this group cannot underestimate. They are physically strong and they have excellent goalscoring attackers in Vlahovic and Mitrovic. Midfield is creative but also strong and if they have a weakness it is probably in defence. This is a good team though and one that I think will challenge the Swiss for second spot in the group.

Switzerland

  • Manager – Murat Yakin
  • Captain – Granit Xhaka
  • 3 Key Players – Xherdan Shaqiri (Mid), Haris Seferovic (Att), Manuel Akanji (Def)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Quarter Finals
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Round of 16
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 15th
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – LLWWW

This Switzerland team has gone from being one of the mid-level teams in Europe, to one of the most consistent performers. Admittedly, they are never that close to winning a major title, but they do tend to make it into the latter stages of tournaments and Murat Yakin’s team will be looking to do that once again at this World Cup. The games with Serbia and Cameroon will be key for the Swiss and if they can pick up six points from them, they will go through, but Serbia are going to be a tricky opponent for them in the group.

Cameroon

  • Manager – Rigobert Song
  • Captain – Vincent Aboubakar
  • 3 Key Players – Andre Onana (GK), Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Mid), Vincent Aboubakar (Att)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Quarter Finals
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – N/A – Did not qualify
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 43rd
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – LWWLL

Cameroon have given us some fantastic World Cup memories over the years reaching the World Cup quarterfinals in 1990 but I feel this team is not quite as strong as some of the previous teams to have qualified for this tournament. They still have some talented players, but the depth of this squad is not as strong. As such, I think in this group they are going to find things very tough, especially against a Brazil side scoring plenty of goals at the moment.

Group G Predicted Results

  • 24th Nov – Switzerland 2-0 Cameroon – Al Janoub Stadium
  • 24th Nov – Brazil 3-1 Serbia – Lusail Iconic Stadium
  • 28th Nov – Cameroon 0-1 Serbia – Al Janoub Stadium
  • 28th Nov – Brazil 3-1 Switzerland – Stadium 974
  • 2nd Dec – Serbia 0-1 Switzerland – Stadium 974
  • 2nd Dec – Cameroon 0-4 Brazil – Lusail Iconic Stadium

Group G Predicted Table (Odds to win Group)

  1. Brazil– 9pts (2/5)
  2. Switzerland – 6pts (9/2)
  3. Serbia – 3pts (6/1)
  4. Cameroon – 0pts (14/1)

Group G Forecast Bet – Brazil 1st, Switzerland 2nd – 7/4 with bet365.

Group H

  • Portugal
  • Ghana
  • Uruguay
  • South Korea

Group H Fixtures

  • 24th Nov – Uruguay v South Korea – Education City Stadium (1pm)
  • 24th Nov – Portugal v Ghana – Stadium 974 (4pm)
  • 28th Nov – South Korea v Ghana – Education City Stadium (1pm)
  • 28th Nov – Portugal v Uruguay – Lusail Iconic Stadium (7pm)
  • 2nd Dec – Ghana v Uruguay – Al Janoub Stadium (3pm)
  • 2nd Dec – South Korea v Portugal – Education City Stadium (3pm)

Group H Team Previews

Portugal

  • Manager – Fernando Santos
  • Captain – Cristiano Ronaldo
  • 3 Key Players – Cristiano Ronaldo (Att), Bernardo Silva (Mid), Ruben Dias (Def)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Third
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Round of 16
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 9th
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – WWLWL

Portugal are the seeded team in this group and that means that they should be favourites to qualify from it. With the squad they have, which is burgeoning with talent, it would be a huge surprise if they do not make it out of the group and in all honesty, they should win it. Ronaldo’s outburst about his club side Manchester United should not affect the national team too much and I think the game between Portugal and Uruguay will decide who wins this group.

Ghana

  • Manager – Otto Addo
  • Captain – Andre Ayew
  • 3 Key Players – Thomas Partey (Mid), Mohammed Kudus (Mid), Inaki Williams (Att)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Quarter Finals
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – N/A – Did not qualify
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 61st
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – LdLLW

Ghana have reached the World Cup quarterfinals before now but I think this team is going to do very well to get out of the group stages of the tournament this time around. I don’t see a great amount of quality in this Ghana squad, although I think Kudus is an exciting young talent and Inaki Williams has pace and power. Their form heading into the tournament also isn’t great so confidence will not be high and this could well be a tough group for them to come through.

Uruguay

  • Manager – Diego Alonso
  • Captain – Diego Godin
  • 3 Key Players – Jose Gimenez (Def), Federico Valverde (Mid), Luis Suarez (Att)
  • Best World Cup Performance – 2x Winners (1930, 1950)
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Quarter Finals
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 14th
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – WdWLW

Another squad packed with huge amounts of experience, Uruguay may well be seeing a golden generation of talent that includes the likes of Muslera, Godin, Cavani and Suarez having their final hurrah at a World Cup Finals, but even though they are advancing in years, they are still more than talented enough to make an impact in this group and in the finals. I think Uruguay will get out of this group, most likely as second to Portugal which could well set up an intriguing Round of 16 clash with Brazil.

South Korea

  • Manager – Paulo Bento
  • Captain – Son Heung-min
  • 3 Key Players – Son Heung-min (Att), Kim Min-jae (Def), Lee Jae-sung (Mid)
  • Best World Cup Performance – Fourth
  • World Cup 2018 Performance – Group Stage
  • Current FIFA Ranking – 28th
  • Current Form (Last 5 games) – WWLDW

A nasty facial injury for Hyeong-min Son has put Korean World Cup plans in a bit of a pickle with the star striker absolutely vital to the team. Son should play some part in the group phase and it is my guess he may have to play with a protective mask. Korea are a good side with Son, but not so dangerous without him. I expect them to beat or at least pick up a point against Ghana but I think that they are going to struggle against the two bigger and more established teams in this group.

Group H Predicted Results

  • 24th Nov – Uruguay 3-1 South Korea – Education City Stadium
  • 24th Nov – Portugal 3-2 Ghana – Stadium 974
  • 28th Nov – South Korea 1-1 Ghana – Education City Stadium
  • 28th Nov – Portugal 2-1 Uruguay – Lusail Iconic Stadium
  • 2nd Dec – Ghana 0-1 Uruguay – Al Janoub Stadium
  • 2nd Dec – South Korea 1-1 Portugal – Education City Stadium

Group B Predicted Table (Odds to win Group)

  1. Portugal – 7pts (1/3)
  2. Uruguay – 6pts (11/2)
  3. South Korea – 2pts (16/1)
  4. Ghana – 1 pt (6/1)

Group B Forecast Bet – Portugal 1st, Uruguay 2nd – 6/4 with bet365.
